By summer, she suffered another relapse and refused to go to a sanitarium. Pyle was once again ensconced in a joint misery that continued into the fall. Depression set in, and Pyle took a leave of absence from the column. He traveled to Indiana to visit his father and entered into a couple of unsatisfying affairs. They were unsatisfying for reasons beyond his guilt. Pyle suffered from sexual impotence, an ongoing condition that had begun in his relationship with Jerry several years earlier and had been unaided by his own heavy drinking and depressive nature.

Five ships, the Brazil, the Argentina, the Gibbons, the Barry, and the Hawaiian Shipper were to take the entire division to North Africa. Walker sailed on the Brazil with about 5,000 of his men, bunked in tiers four high. The Argentina had similar accommodations. Most of the division’s equipment fit on the five transports, with the exception of a tank destroyer battalion and its twenty-four anti-tank vehicles, which were shipped in a vessel especially designed for the assignment. For entertainment purposes, Walker placed a regimental band on four of the five transports, with an orchestra on the fifth.

Aside from the inauspicious weather, it was an appointment that Walker didn’t immediately relish. Despite his beginnings as a soldier in the Ohio National Guard, Walker had long since turned “regular” army. ” Conversely, guard unit members could be suspicious and unfriendly toward regular army folk, especially those who were taking command as he was, after the 36th had been training on active duty for almost a full year. 2 But as the 36th and the general got to know each other through the following year, respect grew and became mutual.
