Development cooperation outcomes With their focus on specific development objectives, largely those of institutional strengthening and capacity-building, university development cooperation projects have led to a great number of enduring links between Canadian universities and their partners in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, and, to a lesser extent, the Middle East, even when, following the termination of official donor funding, the financial resources to sustain such links are negligible.

These young people manifest a new dynamism and a new spirit. They represent a broader spectrum of interests than before, ranging from development to human rights, governance, and the private sector. Today’s young people challenge the status quo and are not the captives of out-dated traditions and conventions based on cultural superiority. They are well informed, culturally sensitive, and hospitable to ideas. They are more willing than previous generations to establish cross cultural relationships, to travel to parts of the world other than the USA and Europe, and to establish enduring ties with their counterparts in other countries.

Therefore, 1950 is probably the most logical choice for the year from which to date the inception of the international dimension of Canada’s universities (Shute 1996). Similarly, Canadian students, both undergraduate and postgraduate, have benefited enormously from research and study opportunities provided by these university projects. Many of these students have gone on to international careers themselves (not to mention contributing to the enlightenment of Canadian citizens), as a result of the stimuli offered by those opportunities for first-hand exposure to the realities of the South and to Canadian responses to those realities.
