The data presented in this chapter are based on a sample of 490 workers who completed child maltreatment assessments and who completed Worker 42 A National Profile of Child Protection Workers Information Forms (see Figure 1).

The primary objective of the CIS was to provide reliable estimates of the scope and characteristics of reported child abuse and neglect across Canada. The CIS also provides an opportunity to examine the professional profile of a national sample of child welfare professionals.

Placement rates ranged from 7% for maltreatment investigations with physical developmental delay, to 28% for investigations that indicated substance-abuse-related birth defects. An additional 13% of investigations indicating substance abuse related birth defects had a placement in an informal setting. The placement rate for maltreatment investigations that indicated one of the behavioural child functioning concerns ranged from 26% for criminal involvement compared to 19% for running away, and 17% for substance abuse and violence toward others.
